After a devastating loss to their county rival the boys soccer team looked to get back in the win column on Thursday night when they traveled to Boonville. The Wildcats controlled the pace of the game and the ball from the opening whistle. The hard worked payed off early when senior Grant Doherty connected with junior Juan Vizcaino for a goal. Mt. Vernon kept the pressure on and continued to control the flow of the game as the half wore on. Mt. Vernon extended their lead when senior Landon Mitchell scored his first career goal off of a deflected corner kick. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Wildcats started the second half sloppier than the first, but never lost the lead. Boonville scored their lone goal of the night on a penalty kick to cut the lead in half, but that was as close as they would get. Mt. Vernon started to re-find their offensive chemistry as the half continued. Senior Logan Dutkiewicz added his first goal of the season off another deflected corner to stretch the Mt. Vernon lead back out. The Wildcats kept the pressure up until the end and ended with a 3-1 win to improve to 8-5 on the season and 8-2 in the conference. Mt. Vernon returns home for the final two games of the season beginning Saturday against Reitz at 3 and ending against Washington next Wednesday with kickoff scheduled for 5.
