Mt. Vernon High School proudly announces the hiring of Brad Higginson as the next Head Football Coach of Wildcat Football — a leader with deep Posey County roots, nearly two decades of coaching experience, and a clear, mission-driven vision for the future of the program. A native of Poseyville and graduate of North Posey High School, Higginson grew up in a community where football mattered. That passion carried him to Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he was a four-year starter at free safety and a D2 honorable mention All-American. He remains in the KWC record books for tackles in a single game (21), interceptions (10), and passes defended (13). While his playing résumé is impressive, it is his extensive coaching background that positions him to lead Mt. Vernon into its next chapter. Higginson brings experience at both the collegiate and high school levels, including: College Student Assistant (Defensive Backs) at Kentucky Wesleyan Graduate Assistant (Defensive Backs) at Gannon University 12 years at Manchester University, serving in multiple roles including Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Backs, Linebackers, and Defensive Line coach 3 years at Cumberland University as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers coach High School Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers coach at Chattanooga Christian School In total, his background spans nearly two decades of coaching, defensive system design, player development, special teams coordination, recruiting relationships, and program leadership. Throughout his career, Higginson has coached and developed All-State, All-Region, and All-Star athletes, while building a strong professional network through 15 years of membership in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). That network and experience provide valuable connections and guidance for Mt. Vernon student-athletes who aspire to compete at the collegiate level. “I want to give back to the game that brought so much to me as a person,” Higginson shared. “Through football, I want to change the lives of the young men I coach.” Higginson’s philosophy extends beyond scheme and scoreboard. He describes his mission as: “Teach, mentor, and lead young men in a community-oriented, family setting that allows them to grow as people, students, and athletes — giving them the confidence, character, and decision-making skills to be positive leaders in their communities and personal lives.” His vision for Mt. Vernon Football is grounded in hard work, discipline, accountability, and character. He speaks often of making an I.M.P.A.C.T. — building a culture where young men strive for greatness while representing their school and community with class, energy, and togetherness. Returning to Posey County is deeply personal for Higginson and his family. With roots in Posey County and a desire to be closer to family, this opportunity represents both a homecoming and a professional calling. “Mt. Vernon is a place that is special and unique,” Higginson said. “I believe the future is bright at MV. With the right support and unified effort, we can win consistently, compete at a high level, and build something the entire community can rally behind.” Mt. Vernon Athletics is confident that Coach Higginson’s experience, adaptability, football IQ, and commitment to mentoring young men will elevate and strengthen the Wildcat Football brand — not simply chasing championships, but building a foundation capable of sustaining excellence. The next era of Wildcat Football will be rooted in tradition, strengthened by experience, and driven by purpose. Welcome to MVHS, Coach Higginson. The future of Mt. Vernon Football is built on I.M.P.A.C.T. — on and off the field.
